John 21:15-22 (NKJV)
15 So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Feed My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Feed My sheep. 18 Most assuredly, I say to you, when you were younger, you girded yourself and walked where you wished; but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will gird you and carry you where you do not wish.” 19 This He spoke, signifying by what death he would glorify God. And when He had spoken this, He said to him, “Follow Me.” 20 Then Peter, turning around, saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following, who also had leaned on His breast at the supper, and said, “Lord, who is the one who betrays You?” 21 Peter, seeing him, said to Jesus, “But Lord, what about this man?” 22 Jesus said to him, “If I will that he remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.”
John 1:43 (NKJV)…Chose them individually just as He comes to you individually
43 The following day Jesus wanted to go to Galilee, and He found Philip and said to him, “Follow Me.”
John 8:12 (NKJV)…Speaks to us showing us He is the true way.
12 Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
John 10:27-30 (NKJV)…Listen to His promises.
27 My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. 28 And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. 30 I and My Father are one.”
John 12:26 (NKJV)…Serving to Glorify Him
26 If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor.
John 13:36-38 (NKJV)…He knows us so well.
36 Simon Peter said to Him, “Lord, where are You going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward.” 37 Peter said to Him, “Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake.” 38 Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake? Most assuredly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times.
John 15:18-27 (NKJV)…We are to live for Him and by the Word not for the world.
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. 20 Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. If they kept My word, they will keep yours also. 21 But all these things they will do to you for My name’s sake, because they do not know Him who sent Me. 22 If I had not come and spoken to them, they would have no sin, but now they have no excuse for their sin. 23 He who hates Me hates My Father also. 24 If I had not done among them the works which no one else did, they would have no sin; but now they have seen and also hated both Me and My Father. 25 But this happened that the word might be fulfilled which is written in their law, ‘They hated Me without a cause.’ 26 “But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. 27 And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning.
My suggestion to you is that you pray and read through the book of John. As you see just on the above Scriptures that to follow Him, you must first love Jesus. We lightly define love at times, but remember God is love and He loves us enough to have sent His Son for us. As Jesus is speaking to Peter notice He asks do you love Me three times and at the conclusion He says follow Me. Love leads to following so seek His love, know His love, cherish His love and never give up on His love.
Jesus going to the cross for us shows us His love. His forgiveness of Peter even after denying Him shows us His love. He teaches us in His Word and tells us how much He loves us. His scars show us His loving grace, mercy and forgiveness. He knows us so well and loves us enough to hear our cries.
As you read His Word and pray He will show you and remind you of His love. As you reflect on your life you will see His love for you. The times He listened, cared, shared, and showed you grace and mercy when others may have abandoned you allows you to see His love. He is ALWAYS there for you.
So, spend time in prayer and in the Scriptures to see how much you are loved and follow the One Who loves you enough to have gone to the cross for you.
